Coimbatore


Coimbatore also commonly known as Kovai, is the second largest city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the administrative headquarters of the Coimbatore District and a major Textile and Engineering hub of South India. It forms a part of the ancient Kongu Nadu region of South India, where its people were the first to establish territorial state. Coimbatore city including its sub-urban areas has a population of 24 lakh people. It is referred as Manchester of South India in business circles.

Situated on the banks of the Noyyal River, Coimbatore is known chiefly for its numerous textile mills, factories, engineering firms, automobile parts manufacturers, health care facilities, educational institutions, pleasant weather, hospitable people and for its Kongu Tamil. The hill stations of Ooty, Coonnor and Valparai are close to the city making it a good tourist attraction all over the year.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest airport is Peelamedu airport, 10 km from the city with regular flights to and from Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Madurai.

Train

Coimbatore is itself a major railway junction of the Southern Railways and there are regular trains to and from Chennai, Rameswaram, Madurai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kanyakumari, Kozhikode, Mettupalayam, Kochi and Delhi.

Road

Coimbatore is connected by good roads to all the major cities of South India.
